Summary of the Book of John

John opens with a profound confession: the Word was with God and was God, and the Word became flesh. From the first chapter, the Gospel centers on Jesus’ identity and invites readers to see His glory. John then presents selected signs and conversations that reveal who Jesus is with theological depth and personal urgency.

Much of the middle section features dialogues that press for a response, including conversations with Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman, and those divided over Jesus’ claims. John emphasizes belief, unbelief, light, darkness, and the testimony that points to Christ. As opposition grows, Jesus continues to reveal the Father through both words and works.

In the final chapters, John gives extended attention to Jesus’ farewell teaching, prayer, crucifixion, and resurrection appearances. Themes of love, abiding, and mission are woven into Jesus’ care for His disciples. The Gospel closes by stating its purpose plainly: that readers may believe Jesus is the Son of God and have life in His name.
